Purbanchal University

Purbanchal University

Purbanchal University (PU) was established by the government of Nepal in 1994 with the aim of decentralizing higher education and expanding opportunities for education across Nepal. One of the key objectives of PU was to develop higher education in the country in a decentralized manner and extend the reach of higher education to various regions. PU plays a significant role in promoting socio-economic transformation in Nepal through the provision of quality education that is appropriate for a quality life and sustainable future.

Since its establishment, PU has become a beacon of hope for both urban and rural communities, especially for those who aspire to attain higher education within the country. The university offers an affordable fee structure, making education accessible to a wider population. Its expansive campus, spanning over 545 hectares in rural settings of Koshi Province Nepal, provides an ideal environment for learning and personal growth.

One of the notable achievements of PU is its authorization to conduct the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) program. The university has obtained permission from the Nepal Government to utilize Koshi Hospital in Biratnagar as a teaching hospital for the program. This collaboration is facilitated through a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Ministry of Health and Population, the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, and Purbanchal University. The utilization of Koshi Hospital for the MBBS program enables PU to provide practical training and clinical experience to its medical students, ensuring the development of competent healthcare professionals.

PU's commitment to academic development and quality education is evident through its fully autonomous status as a public university. This autonomy allows the university to shape its policies and programs according to the needs of the community it serves. With its affordable fee structure, expansive campus, and focus on quality education, PU is poised to make a substantial impact on the academic landscape of Nepal.

In conclusion, Purbanchal University is dedicated to providing quality education and promoting socio-economic transformation in Nepal. With its emphasis on knowledge preservation, free enquiry, and comprehensive development, PU is committed to empowering rural communities and contributing to the overall progress of the nation.

Inter-Relation of PU with Other Universities:

Nepal currently boasts 19 universities, comprising 11 government-established universities, nine provincial universities, and autonomous academies such as B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS). Purbanchal University, governed by the Purbanchal University Act, operates under a distinct structural framework in comparison to Tribhuvan University and Nepal Sanskrit University. The university's financial sustenance predominantly hinges on internally generated resources, notably student fees, affiliation fees, and other revenue streams, with minimal support from the Government of Nepal. Consequently, the university faces the challenge of ensuring adequate funding for its operations. In this regard, it is imperative to explore collaborative ventures and partnerships with both national and international universities, institutions, and research centers to address this fiscal constraint.

Purbanchal University has more than 20 MoUs with National and International Universities and Academic Institutions such as Jamia Millia Islamia University(https://jmi.ac.in/upload/mou/mou_jmi_purbanchal_university_nepal_2017february8.pdf) as well as Banaras Hindu University https://bhu.ac.in/SiteAttachments/ Academic%20Collaboration%20MOU2020314142950600.pdf).

Vision:

Vision of Purbanchal University is
" To develop this university as the model in fulfilling the national objectives of education'.The aim is to address the present issues and long term sustainable development of the country, by alleviating the declining productivity of industries and agriculture, the increasing population and unemployment, the unsustainable development and erosion of natural resources, and the environmental deterioration and increasing vulnerability against human welfare."
At the outset, PU realised its role, although being a public university, as an interface between public and private academic institutions to provide affordable but reminiscent education to the mass while enduring self-sustenance and good-governance. The almost free education in public university on one hand and the astounding fees at private university on the other has resulted in wider anomalies and weaknesses in our education system. PU’s major challenge is to bridge the education gap through self-sustenance programs and activities, and make education affordable and accessible for all.
The University is committed to achieve academic excellence through research, teaching and practical studies in specific areas that contribute to the social, economic and sustainable development of the country. At present, the University has broadly identified Industry-Technology, Agriculture-Forestry, Environment- Rural-Cultural Subsistence and Sustainable Development as specific areas of “Academic Excellence”.

Objectives:

  • Run professional and Technical Institutions of Career-oriented higher Education facilitating study, research and teaching programs related to various disciplines and promote all around development of its student, teachers and scholars abilities and personalities;

  • Contribute to the creation of a comparative high competitive environment in higher education by extending and disseminating knowledge by fostering its efficient and effective application;

  • Mobilize and utilize resources-local, national or International- with a view of introducing improvement in the quality and effectiveness of its academic programs catering for the changing socio-economic needs of the country;

  • Develop as model institution of higher learning by correcting academic weaknesses of both public and private Institutions
